Firefox 1.5 arrives as promised, packing in more than before

The newest version of the popular Firefox browser arrived yesterday, Firefox 1.5, to make good on promises of a better and faster browsing experience after three beta versions over three months gave users a feel of what was to come while testing and experiencing them. UPDATED: The latest version of the popular Firefox browser was released on Tuesday. Version 1.5 is to fulfill the promises of a better and faster browsing experience, which gave users in the three beta versions released over three months a feel of what was to come. This version seems to have everything going for it with faster and improved features as its key priorities.

A new feature added is the option to personalize the browser screen by a drag and drop re-order of tabs as per user’s comfort. The automated update is also a new feature added here. These updates will take up only half a megabyte of space or even lesser. Similarly, extensions updating is also said to have been improved.

A "Clear Private Data" feature deletes personal data and information stored with browser menu items or keyboard shortcuts. The other new features of the browser include a revamped options menu, speedy navigation with "Back" and "Forward" tabs and more category icons.

Moreover, the browser can go into “safe mode” to avoid risks, block pop-ups. Answers.com is also included within the browser. This version can identify RSS feeds and provide descriptive reporting of error pages.

On the support-side, Firefox 1.5 offers better accessibility for DHTML, and screen reader software includes Window-Eyes 5.5 of Microsoft which is specifically meant for visually-challenged users. Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS 2, CSS 3) and JavaScript 1.6 are also supported in this version.

This version is available for free on www.getfirefox.com and www.mozilla.com. This browser’s release commemorates the anniversary of the open-source browser which is an alternative to Microsoft’s proprietary Internet Explorer. Mozilla's vice president of products, Mike Schroepfer is confident that most users “will notice the difference” which will help the browser increase its market-share from the present 11 percent. Schroepfer believes that the browser's ability “to render web pages faster and make sure it is always up to date”, in addition to support of future web standards will attract more users.

However, this may not rattle Microsoft which had 85 percent of the market-share last year. Mozilla, its early success notwithstanding, is aware of this fact and has already started work on its next version 2.0 for Firefox slated for release in 2007.

I'm running Windows 3.1, though
By: Fredric L. Rice , Thu, 01 Dec 2005 20:50:01 GMT

I'm stuck with Netscape running under Windows 3.1 at home since I've got a lot of legacy software and hardware for the ham radio packet switch and terminal node controller world.

It's a damn shame there's no better browser -- that I'm aware of -- that'll run under Win3.1 with some 8 meg RAM max.

Hmmmmm interesting.....
By: 2Shane , Thu, 01 Dec 2005 14:53:02 GMT

The first comment by Ino sounds like a MS puppet, talking the corporate jargon in street language.

Anyway, whatever MS's stooges may say, IE and the people and company who developed it, are so bloody retarded....

Like for instance:

Lots of other browsers have had pop up blockers for like 6 or 8 years, and yet MS have only just introduced this...

Like OH Duhhhhhh.....

And tabbed browsing... well does any one ever have more than about 5 or 10 + pages open for research?

And with FF (and Opera etc.,) I can have one page open with 50 or more tabs running...

With Internet Deplorer, I have to change the actual windows...

And Internet Deplorer, is SLOWER than treacle on a cold morning.....

To keep using IE? What do you think I am - stupid?

come on you sheep, stop climbing the FF bandwagon, the wheels are about to fall off.

After 2.x years of development, and FF still isn't as usable as IE is. Tabs aside (which i personally don't really prefer over multiple taskbar buttons, since it's one more mouse click to get to the desired window), FF is slower (YES it is, sure u can blame it on not being integrated in the OS.

Reason is irrelevent, it IS simply slower, full stop), handles address bar highlighting in such an annoying fashion, doesnt give me a new window (or tab for that matter) with the history of the "opener" window (i find that invaluable when donig some serious googling back and forth) and on and on and on. My friend told me "come on just try FF for a week, leave IE alone, and you'll see". Well, i took his advice, and after a week i couldn't wait to get back to good old IE.

As for security vulnerabilites, as long as you browse responsibly and stay away from shady pr0n/warez/crackz sites (as you should anyway) you'll be fine. I am, and i dont even have any AV installed.

Oh and FYI i'm not a layman, i've been a professional web developer for 5 years now.

I'll wait another 2 years, maybe FF will have finally out"foxed" mighty MS by then. But as of now, i'll keep on Internet Exploring thank you very much

Firefox 1.5
By: rusty , Thu, 01 Dec 2005 04:15:18 GMT

Just released, eh? I've had it for some time. :-) It's my main browser, only using IE when I have to [because of Microsoft's own thrashing of Java applets.] Good work!

stick with firefox
By: scott loiacono , Thu, 01 Dec 2005 04:07:16 GMT

I up graded to firefox 1.5 and find it stellar. It is much better than IE I also love the fact that it is faster but the problem with it is that it does not support the google toolbar as of yet. But I am sure Google knows the problem and will make a tool bar that will work with firefox 1.5 I have used firefox all my life and it is the best. Until Microsoft updates IE not until late 2006 please stick to Firefox or do try opera.

Firefox
By: Bent , Thu, 01 Dec 2005 02:16:08 GMT

As a Mac OSX user I have given up on Safari & IE since Firefox got my attention! There are still some bugs as all browsers experience, but I'm sure they'll fix 'em!

Rendering Speeds
By: Richard , Wed, 30 Nov 2005 21:49:27 GMT

In a earlier post GeorgeC suggests that FireFox is a slower browser than I.E. Using the site http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/browserSpeed.html
I checked my own experience with IE and FireFox
While rather unscientific, I noted the following:
After the initial browser load, FireFox with the pop-up blocker enabled, loaded at almost exactly the same speed as Internet Explorer. 715ms vs 690ms...the difference between the two browsers is undetectable. Given the new features, the fact that FireFox is not integrated into the operating system as Internet Explorer is, FireFox wins hands down. It should be noted that the author used an older computer, so at 800mhz a computer will run the required rendering processes much slower than on my own 2.2gig machine. So it's all relative.

FireFox is strongly recommended. And for me the obligatory Internet Explorer is just a waste of hard drive space on my computer.. used only when I access my Hotmail account.

Opera
By: King of Tech , Wed, 30 Nov 2005 18:56:42 GMT

Opera is still SO MUCH better than Firefox. It appears that the Firefox community is still trying to play "catch-up" to Opera, in terms of features, security, inclusion of RSS, usability, etc. How about saved sessions, inteligent mouse gestures, voice commands? Opera has all this and more!

Seems slow

Since the inital release of Firefox I've been hooked. The new version is even better. No more IE for me ;)

Firefox
By: Peter Stallard , Wed, 30 Nov 2005 18:28:56 GMT

I'll be getting it right away.IE has serious problems that are never fixed, in fact they even endorse the products of other software companies to fix the problems that they have neglected to deal with themselves...at a price of course.
If that is what they think of their customers I'll be happy to go somewhere else especially as this latest version of Firefox is getting good reviews.

really?
