NEW YORK, March 19 A New York Times investigation published Monday claims just 2 percent of funds Shriners raised in 2005 went to operate their charitable hospitals.In interviews with current and former members of the Masonic order, the newspaper reported more than 57 percent of the $32 million the group raised in 2005 through circuses, bingo games and raffles went to costs of the fraternity.''Money raised for the hospitals is being used to pay for parties and liquor and trips and they know it,'' said Johnny Edwards, a former leader of Oasis Shrine in Charlotte, N.C. ''The way I see it, they are stealing from crippled children.''
In response, Michael Andrews, the executive vice president of the Imperial Council, told the Times isolated cases of fraud have been discovered and rectified.
''I think if you compare us to any other charity in America, you would find we do the best job, Andrews said. I think you need to look at the big picture here: We probably do more for children with special needs than any other entity.''
Since 1919, Shriners have built 22 hospitals that provide orthopedic and burn care to needy children.

Each Shriner pays $5 per year into an endowment fund that is used to purchase securities and investments. The interest on the fund operates the hospitals. Shriners raise money through paper sales, grapefruit sales, etc. to operate the Shrine buildings/centers,etc. The fund raising is carefully audited.

The shriners are the best, we were in big trouble when our daughter was born with a cleft pallet, no hospitals would help us because we didn't have any insurance, on our way back from the last place at childrens hospital in little rock, we stopped in at a walmart where the shriners were doing a fundraiser selling onions. we went up and ask if they could help us. they scooped us up pay all of our traveling costs a couple times a year to go to chicago shriners hospital, at have taken care of our daughters 5 surgery's since she was 3 months old, now she will be 10 this May, and she has a beautiful smile thanks to the shriners, they have always picked up every bill and every expense for us. Their doctors are very proffesional, their hospitals, very clean, lots of activities for the kids all day long, so don't let this news story drag you down. their great people,

If one were to know any Mason, one would know that this is misleading. We, as good men and as Masons and Shriners invite you to find out more about our good intentions and characters by attending any public event (there are many) that we hold in order to benefit those who need assistance. Ask any Mason to explain to you what our fraternity is about, and you will understand why fraud or mis-representation is not the case.
With so many hospitals and people doing such great work for so many, it's a shame that this publication had to try to strip some beauty from it. Organzations fund themselves in many ways, including endowments and fundraisers. Does every penny the GOP or the DNC make go to campagins? Hardly. But they get the job done for those whom they serve. As do we. Masons alone contribute more than $1 Million each day from thier own pockets (as a whole) to various charities throughout the nation.
It is good and proper to advance free speech and press. It is also good to bring to light (as we would say) impropriety on the behalf of anyone choosing to do the wrong thing. Just remember that in a free society, that when you report things for the benefit of a few more readers today, then you may find that you lose many more in the future.

Wow... eartimes.org apparently has NO integrity when it comes to news at all. And the way its written? It looks like a 3rd grader wrote it. Where's the quotes in the last paragraph where you are quoting someone? I had to read it twice to make sure 'I think...' wasn't actually the opinion of this site, and not the quote of Mr. Andrews.
Oh, and taking facts, twisting them around, and posting them? Slander much? I'd like to see what this .org site does for children under 18.
This site is just about as reputable as one of those magazines you see with 'Batboy born in Tazmania' on the cover.

Actually according to the NYTimes article about 42.8% of the funds raised in 2005 went to the
hospitals and to transporting children to the hospitals (9million and 4.7 millon respectively).

The New York Times article says nothing like you are claiming. I don't know if this is an intentional slander campaign, but you'd be well-served to remove this fraudulent article.
Second: your editor needs to be fired. Try a bit of punctuation next time, perhaps?

Way to cherry pick statistics from the original report. I'm sure your due diligence could also find the Shriners having WMDs that they could launch on to your home within 10 minutes as well.

From the NY Times: Only 2 percent of the Shrine hospitals’ operating income comes from money raised by Shrine temples and members’ dues. (The bulk is supplied by the hospitals’ $9 billion endowment.)
This is different than your claim that just 2 percent of funds Shriners raised in 2005 went to operate their charitable hospitals.
I don't disagree that there is a problem with the Shriner's accounting practices, but your article is misquoting the original investigation and skewing the story in order to gain readership. True journalism reports the FACTS and not misinterpretations of said facts. Are there no editors at earthtimes.org?
