ATLANTA, March 16 Nearly half of menopausal women have sleep disturbances every night, and one-quarter have sleep disturbances several times a night, says a U.S. survey.

The survey found 55 percent had not discussed their sleep disturbances with their doctor and 47 percent reported their healthcare provider had not offered any treatment for their sleep disturbances.

The findings, released by Red Hot Mamas, a menopause education group, reveal many menopausal women do not know sleep disturbances are associated with menopause.

The Sleepless in Menopause City survey data clearly reveal that sleep is a major issue for women throughout their menopausal years, Karen Giblin, founder of Red Hot Mamas, said in a statement. What's so surprising, though, is the survey shows many menopausal women are not aware sleep disturbances may be related to their menopausal or hormonal status -- just like hot flashes and night sweats -- and women are not communicating with their healthcare provider about their sleep quality.
