GameSpy has announced that it will be providing support for a multiplayer technology for game publishers interested in developing titles for Nintendo's Wii games console. GameSpy, which is a unit of Fox Interactive Media, has developed middleware technology that will allow publishers to develop community features like friends list and rankings data on their titles.
"This partnership will expand our wireless community of players on Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president, Nintendo of America. "Millions of Nintendo DS users have already logged on using GameSpy's technology, and now Wii owners will be able to do the same in a fun and easy-to-use environment."
The first game to utilize this technology will be the Pokémon Battle Revolution, which is due for release on 25 June this year. GameSpy and Nintendo have already collaborated previously in bringing wireless community features on Nintendo DS. The partnership provided an easy way for gamers to link up across the globe and play games wirelessly.
Commenting on the latest venture, Jaime Berger, a senior vice president of consumer products and technology at IGN Entertainment said that Nintendo was an invaluable partner. "Our goal is to extend our ground-breaking work on the Nintendo DS to provide Wii users with the social, community and multiplayer tools that we believe will expand the online gaming experience to the mass market," he added.
