LONDON, March 9 U.S. guitarist Jimi Hendrix, with hits such as Purple Haze and Foxy Lady, was crowned the wildest guitar hero by Britain ' s Classic Rock magazine. Hendrix, who made his name in the '60s and whose version of America's national anthem electrified the crowd at Woodstock in 1969, beat Rolling Stones' Keith Richards, who was second, and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, who placed third in the magazine's poll of readers, the BBC said. Hendrix, who died in 1970, had a devastating technique and redefined the term 'guitar hero', said Classic Rock editor Scott Rowley. Singers might think that they are the real kings of rock 'n' roll, but our poll shows that guitarists are far crazier, usually more talented and the real driving force behind the music, Rowley said. Rounding out the top 10 were Led Zeppelin's guitarist Jimmy Page; the late Dimebag Darrell, who played for heavy metal bands such as Pantera and Damageplan; Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath; the late Irish bluesman Rory Gallagher; Van Halen's Eddie Van Halen; Chuck Berry and the late Kurt Cobain. I agree with many of the above. Remove Richards and Cobain. Candidates for replacements would be Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton and Prince (latter two mentioned by others already).
In additon, if it were up to me, I'd bump Iommi to the #2 position.

dont get me wrong i am a huge fan of nirvana. but seriously now. he should not have been on this list. zappa, gilmour, prince (and i hate prince with a passion. i believe he is the most overrated musician of all time) but he can play the guitar. dont forget about eric clapton either. seriously did you put a bunch of random names in a hat and draw from it?

Robert Johnson.
King of the Delta Blues.
Without him, none of these guys would have picked up a guitar.
Kurt "I'm a millionare assclown who's wife is a skank so I must kill myself" Cobain isn't even worhty enough to lick the dog crap off Robert's shoes.

One name: David Gilmour
Smells Like Teen Spirit shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as songs like Time, Comfortably Numb, Shine On....etc.

Why doesnt Prince make these lists? I saw him play at a club in Miami Beach. I was in the front row and the guy was amazing. Absolutely thrashed. I have a DVD from a show he did in Vegas. He covered Zeppelin tunes. He plays rock, funk, blues. The guy is versaitile and he plays all those styles of music flawlessly. I mean Kurt Cobain made this list and Prince could probably play the guitar behind his back better than Cobain.
If you dont believe me get ahold of a copy of the Undertaker bootleg. I cant believe Prince was ignored. I dont think he gets what he deserves because he doesnt fit into the macho mold of Rock and Roll. But then again you could make the argument that at the begining of his career he ripped of Hendrix fashion style. I dont know, but it seems unfair that he didnt make the list.
