NEW YORK: Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has sent a letter to former U.S. vice president and environmentalist Al Gore saying he should as a crusader against global warming go vegetarian. It says the meat industry is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

PETA said the effect of meat addition among people on climate is truly staggering and pointed out to a recent report by the U.N., “Livestock's Long Shadow—Environmental Issues and Options,” which has shown that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined.

It also drew attention of Gore to a research study at the University of Chicago, which showed that those who switched to a vegan diet did more to combat global warming than those who switched from a standard American car to a Toyota Prius.

The voluntary group said unfortunately Gore's Oscar winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" on the perils of global warming has not addressed the fact that the meat industry is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

PETA's president Ingrid E. Newkirk said the single best thing that people can do for their health, for animals and for the environment is to go vegetarian. “The best and easiest way for Mr Gore to show his critics that he's truly committed to fighting global warming is to kick his meat habit immediately.'”

PETA also reminded Gore how his critics have been questioning him whether he practices what he preaches and that by going vegetarian he can silence them and at the same time contribute his mite to the efforts of controlling global warming.

The organization offered to cook for him faux “fried chicken” to introduce him to meat-free meals.

Meanwhile, An Inconvenient Truth is making its TV premiere on Showtime Sunday at 8 p.m. EDT. The documentary has already been to the theaters and is available on DVD.

Dude, what happened that day? What day??

When you got kicked out of your folks' home? Well, I did not have any money, so I went to the park and waited there. Pretty soon, the cops arrived and then the amublance workers.

What were they doing there? Just waiting...

Then what happened? Well then some of the local animals started to arrive, mainly cats, dogs, squirrels, skunks..

And? They appeared to be on high alert, the animals.

Then? I saw a few european people, east asian people, myself south asian and there must be been others.

Anyways, soon I needed to take a dump, so the bathroom was working at the park, I mean, so I unloaded a big one.

Then I got thirst, and the water fountains seemed to be working so i took a big swig of water from the fountain.

Then I started to walk to the next park cause the fountains fired off at 5 in the morning.

I ended up in mini Japan town and they seemed to be up early as well. I think only one of the young chicks looked rested and attractive.

Then I walked back to the old park and then it was early dawn and the sunlight was shining. Ok, now i can fall assleep then the fucken lawnmower guy showed so I had to move again.

Anyways, some of the locals started to show, some black ones, some white ones, some yellow ones, some women and some men. Well then, I arrived back home with new agreements with the folks.

I went ahead and contacted the UN cause I think there is a war going on...

There are some websites but have to wade through thousands of species and subspecies. We need a scanning device that can connect to the Internet and conduct a search.

kill them all, duh! not the solution.
By: Boriquita , Sun, 18 Mar 2007 03:02:18 GMT

How is killing all animals going to help? We have to stop breeding them. Let them do it naturally. Stop caging them. If we stop buying them, the corporate world will get the message and stop trying to sell us carcass and diseases.

Although PETA can be quite harsh, they do have a point here. If you truly want to help the environment, this single best way to do so is to become a vegetarian. Producing vegetables and grains uses far less land and fossil fuels per unit of food produced.

First of all, it is absolutely true,
and second of all watch this video -
www.meat.org -> there's another reason to become vegetarian TODAY. And, what are you talking about, kill them all??? that's a stupid idea, duh
just stop giving all of them so many hormones, stop making animals unnaturaly pregnant, and the numbers will decrease so much, you can't even imagine.

Yes, like all of us, Al Gore, too, should become vegetarian!
By: Maynard S. Clark , Sat, 10 Mar 2007 02:51:48 GMT

Yes, like all of us, Al Gore, too, should become vegetarian!

I serve on the Green Committee for my academic department in the Harvard Medical School; our school has shown An Inconvenient Truth.

How many real environmentalists ARE vegetarian? Lots. And Al Gore would do well to realize the interconnectedness of individual choices and ecological impact.

We can only blame industry so long before we must acknowledge that individual contributions are aggregated, that aggregatedindividual contributions drive marketing and business and production, and that animal agriculture is the #1 agricultural polluter and the #1 energy user in various areas.

Just think, and visit www.EarthSave.org

Oh, and lots of "cool folks" as well as bright folks who contribute are vegetarians, like Steve Jobs (vegan). And "guess who's coming to dinner" (Sidney Poitier), and he's a vegan!

yup, that's what to do. perhaps not kill them, per se, but simply stop breeding them.

here's a related 8-year old article about where the Union of Concerned Scientists placed meat-eating at the time

btw, it has to do with more than just cow farts.

Peta asks Al Gore to go vegetarian
By: watcher , Fri, 09 Mar 2007 12:22:46 GMT

Peta claims "..raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined." No idea if this is true, but if it is, it's because of the methane they generate in their gut and then expel. So, it's not the eating of them that causes the problem, Peta, it's their being there at all. So, I guess Peta's solution will be to kill them all??
