Apple Computer has released new updates for iTunes and QuickTime that fix about 8 security vulnerabilities in the media player software.
Apple said in a security alert that the flaws were serious as they exposed both Macs as well as Windows PCs to remote attacks.
QuickTime 7.1.5 is meant to address several security issues, Apple said in a release. It added that an attacker could take control of the PC by creating a file that could be opened with QuickTime.
Apple said that it was also releasing some functionality improvements with the new updates. Apple's last fix was in January when it set right a zero-day vulnerability as a part of its "Month of the Apple Bugs" project. The company regularly updates the QuickTime software.
Security experts say that as the operating systems have beefed up their security, hackers are targeting widely used applications like media players and anti-virus shields. The new Apple updates can be downloaded from the company's website.
