Hong Kong - Hong Kong saw its largest ever annual number of HIV cases recorded in 2006 with 19 per cent year-on-year jump in infection rates, officials announced Tuesday.
The virus that can lead to AIDS was found in 373 people in 2006, 60 cases more than in 2005, the territory's Department of Health said in a statement.
Fourteen new cases of full-blown AIDS were also reported, bringing the cumulative number of cases in the city of 6.9 million to 855, the department said.
Health experts have expressed concern that more people in Hong Kong are having unprotected sex in the mistaken belief that the risks of contracting HIV have fallen.
