SANTIAGO, Chile, Feb. 22 Seventeen former Chilean officials were ordered by a judge to stand trial in connection with the disappearance of French citizens during the military regime.

However, one of the officials ordered to stand trial reportedly died last month, leaving only 16 to be tried in a French court in absentia, El Mercurio reported Thursday.

Some 3,000 Chileans and foreigners were killed or disappeared during the 17-year military dictatorship in Chile led by Gen. Augusto Pinochet from 1973 to 1990.
