JERUSALEM, Feb. 22 A coalition of Arab community leaders in Israel has drafted a manifesto demanding the country's Jews share power in a binational state.

The Future Vision of the Palestinian Arabs in Israel, written by 40 academics and activists, has gained the support of the Committee of Arab Mayors in Israel and other community leaders. The manifesto demands that Israel ' s 1.4 million Arab citizens receive equal treatment and insists the Arabs are an indigenous group with collective rights, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday. Shawki Khatib, head of the 64-member Arab mayors group, said the document was created as an attempt to document Jewish discrimination against Arabs and spark discussion of how the two groups can coexist.

The main message is that we do not accept our situation as second-class citizens, Khatib. We want to change that situation, and we prefer to change it through dialogue. The manifesto sparked angry reactions from some Jewish conservatives.

Avigdor Lieberman, a Cabinet member with the Israel Is Our Home Party, said that when faced with the choice between democratic values and maintaining Jewish control of the government, it is more important that we remain a Jewish state.

Israel and Palestine

There will never be security for the Jews or peace for the entire middle east until Israel withdraws to the boundaries set by the UN in Nov 1947.
By the way, the continuing persecution of the Palestinians is not making any friends for Israel around the world.
