Netscape has launched the latest version of its browser – Netscape 8.02. The most important improvement in the latest version is that it plugs the hole that the Netscape browser was causing in Internet Explorer. Computers sporting the previous version would show Internet Explorer pages with XML as empty pages.

The problem was highlighted by Microsoft employee Dave Massy in his web log. Massy suggested deleting Netscape to allow for smooth functioning of the Internet Explorer.

But AOL spokesman Andrew Weinstein blamed Internet Explorer for the fault. He said that when officials were amending the XML problem, they came across faulty documentation on Internet Explorer, which is the likely reason behind of the problem.

The new Netscape version, released on Thursday, is the second upgrade of June. Netscape 8 was also launched this month. After launching the supposedly ‘secure’ browser, Netscape, which belongs to the America Online Limited (AOL), had to launch another version to plug various security holes in the Netscape 8 version.

Netscape.com, on its web site, said, “All user agent string issues and inconsistencies have been fixed. Multiple history sync issues have been fixed. Miscellaneous trident engine integration issues have been resolved. Multiple crash fixes (have been made). Various performance improvements (have been made).”

Re: Faulty documentation
By: Consultant , Mon, 20 Jun 2005 14:12:25 GMT

That is a naive claim of monumental proportions.

"Testing", as you should well know given your pseudonym ("QA"), is a non-trivial task which can only detect the presence of bugs; testing is not a validation of the non-existence of bugs.

Fact: as software complexity increases (e.g., added functionality), so does test design and testing effort.

Anecdotal evidence: in my many years of experience, I have observed that it is common industry practice to code to specs (e.g., API documentation) and atypical to test 3rd party products (outside of the product being developed).

Exception to the rule: arguably, in this case, basic IE functionality should have been tested for breakage, given changes to the registry, but I believe this is a lesson learned rather than a reason to denounce the quality of NS8.

Conclusion: by your reckoning, you shouldn't even have Windows installed on your machines, given Microsoft's own incompetence with respect to software bugs.

Testing just what?
By: Stephen Samuel , Mon, 20 Jun 2005 13:51:03 GMT

The Netscape people tested Netscape. It worked just fine... The faulty IE documentation seems to have cause IE to break when developers followed the instructions from Microsoft.

It remines me of the problem I ran into in the last days of Windows 3.1, where increasing the buffer size for a laser printer caused the mouse to malfunction -- go figure.

Windows is just so badly designed that a change in one area can cause malfunctions in apparently unrelated areas. The reall solution is to uninstall windows.

Faulty Documentation?
By: Quality Assurance , Mon, 20 Jun 2005 08:27:24 GMT

What does that 'faulty documentation' statement mean? That they wrote software simply based on documentation without testing? That would attest incompetence of monumental dimension. This product will never get onto my machines...

version numbers...
By: Fernando Cassia , Mon, 20 Jun 2005 08:19:28 GMT

To the fellow using 7.1 ... that's ancient, not old.

The last 7.x version was 7.2, dated mid-2004 (not 7.1 dated mid-2003!). Netscape 7.2 is built on top of Mozilla Suite 1.7.2

The last Netscape 8.x is 8.02, based on Firefox 1.0.4 with the XML bugfix when using the MS IE engine.

Odd feature of netscape
By: Hosh Potish , Mon, 20 Jun 2005 01:12:13 GMT

Thanks for the advice. I just noticed that the update feature is either automatic or notification. Is there a way to make it more manual than that? Firefox doesn't. Bye the way. When first using netscape on startup before accessing the internet, i noticed a specifc website it always accesses (non homepage) and repeadly does it before finally giving up. My question for that is why?

It still doesn't work. All the links are dead.

netscape as a viable option
By: kristoffe brodeur , Sun, 19 Jun 2005 21:09:14 GMT

I feel that using netscape in a windows XP system would be wonderful if things like SSL(secure socekets layering) for credit card purchasing and flash MX engine intergration would work 100%. I also feel that all the browsers should agree on border, field, and frame rendering and notation, so all web pages look the same. They may load differently and have different memory management, storage, housekeeping, but it's ridiculous to have them all purposefully cause headaches for web designers out there. Like VHS, this war of tweaking will get us nowhere. Like DVD, most systems render very similarily, unless you actually pause the video and really look for slight decompression differences, or really have 7.1 super speakers hooked up to your dvd player. The point is, leave the output similar, make things like searches, and options the tweaks, make sure all can share harmoniously. This is the main reason for spyware, bugs, and other vulnerabilities. We are all getting shot by stray bullets from this war. And our livelihoods, if it be electronic, are being destroyed by the viscocity of these competing differences at the core level.

Netscape

Quoting Hosh Potish, re - offline installers:

Netscape, Firefox, Mozilla - while the UI and names might differ - the rendering backend is based on the same code (Gecko).

Re: Offline installers
By: Bruce , Sun, 19 Jun 2005 20:18:03 GMT

Hosh Potish:

Netscape 8 does have an offline installer. On the download page, just click the "Trouble downloading?" link and it'll take you to a page where you can download the full offline installer.

8.0 and 8.02
By: Dave M , Sun, 19 Jun 2005 20:00:40 GMT

I use 7.1 and like it. I tried 8.0 last week and found it to be so buggy as to be almost unusable. I might have gotten a corrupted copy, but whatever, I'll wait for everything in this 8.* to get sorted out because 7.1 works just fine.

reward
By: Farid , Sun, 19 Jun 2005 19:55:36 GMT

to mostafa
there is no such as a reward from netscape group & there is no netscape group.
ignore any such messages. they are phishing or spoofing emails designed to separate uou from your money & nothing.
never open any email which asks you for money or says you have won a prize.
& never respond to an email which says its from a bank or credit card company or ebay which asks you to send them your account number or pin.
be careful there are a lot of crooks out there.

Alernates
By: Khan Md Ashraf , Sun, 19 Jun 2005 19:07:56 GMT

I am happy that AOL went ahead and came up with Netscape 8.0 inspite of all the problems. It is always good to have choices. It is good for people to use different software. Maybe if M$ hadn't been so dominant to the almost complete exclusion of similar OS software, we would have had less problems. It would not have been easy for script kiddies to write rogue programs for the dominant 90% of the OS software. A monopoly usually is killed by it's dominance which results from its habit of killing off all competition. A vicious circle ain't it ?

Offline installers
By: Hosh Potish , Sun, 19 Jun 2005 18:38:58 GMT

I tried netscape 8 and i think that firefox is still better. I'm surprised that there isn't an offline installer of netscape 8 like there was for previous versions.
