Sofia - The border blockade by protesting Greek farmers has cost Bulgarian businesses 6.9 million euros (9.5 million dollars) so far, authorities in Sofia said Wednesday. The provisional figures were far lower than the 3 million euros a day the Bulgarian government had anticipated at the start of the blockade three weeks ago. A similar protest on the Greek side last year has cost Bulgarian businesses a total 5 million euros.
Bulgaria, meanwhile, urged enterprises to document their losses and said it would sue Greece at the European Union's court in Luxembourg. The economy ministry has posted the forms for damage reports on its internet site.
Hardest-hit by the blockade are trucking companies located in the south, whose vehicles were stuck for days at the border, and tourist agencies, which face losses because the border was closed at the peak of the skiing season.
