Madrid - Princess Elena of Spain, 46, has officially been divorced from her husband Jaime de Marichalar, the royal palace of Zarzuela confirmed on Tuesday. The divorce was entered into the royal register of births, deaths and marriages on January 21, it said.
It marks the first time since the monarchy was reinstated in Spain nearly 35 years ago that a member of the royal family has divorced.
After 14 years of marriage, Elena and de Marichalar, a 46-year-old banker, submitted an application for divorce in November 2009. They have two children together.
The princess is the oldest daughter of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, and is fourth in line to the throne.
