SANTA CLARA, California: Nvidia Corp., world leader in GPU technologies for video and graphics cards, has a launched a new version of its GeForce 8800 GTS graphics chip, which has 320 MB of video memory.
This latest GeForce 8800 GTS is a variant of GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB, except that is has half the video memory and its cost is lesser. It features the same 500 MHz core and 800 MHz clock speeds as the 640 MB variant and systems manufacturers can set their own clock speeds on overclocked models. There is also no change in the memory interface. The new card will also have 96 shader processors.
Nvidia is currently shipping GeForce 8800 GTS with 320 MB graphics cards and these are available at prices starting at $299.
The company hopes to get a clientele wanting to make use of the DirectX10 gaming in a cost-effective manner, as they would not have to make use of the current 640 MB 8800 GTS, which is costing around $410.
The new chip is ideally designed for Windows Vista and DirectX10.0, say experts, helping users to have the maximum benefits of the operating system and the latest games. The combination of DirectX10.0 to the lumenex engine and the NVIDIA Quantum effects will enable gamers to enjoy realistic effects and accuracy of characters, they say.
