Washington - Thinking of buying more books? Why bother when you get over 30,000 great books for free from Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org). This treasure trove for readers makes available books that were previously available in print and are now downloadable. In an instant, you can have books covering almost any topic in a format compatible with your PC, Sony Reader, iPhone or other mobile device. A handy search field is on the main page, allowing you to search by author or title. --------

Washington - Preparing for holiday shopping? Look no further than price comparison sites, which are more popular than ever, thanks to slumping economies around the world. Some price comparison sites are country-specific, but regardless of where you are, you can use well-established sites such as Pricegrabber.com, NextTag.com, or BizRate.com to check out general pricing and availability for products in which you have an interest.

Washington - Windows hides many file types by default, a practice which can lead to confusion when you are hunting for a specific file for purposes of troubleshooting. It doesn't hurt to change this behaviour. To do so, open Windows Explorer and from the Tools menu in Explorer, choose Folder Options. Select the View tab and from the list of options, select the option button labelled "Show hidden files, folders, and drives." Click Apply. From that point forward, you should never be in the dark about which files are on your hard drive.

--------

Washington - If you are a Windows user and are not protected by anti-virus or anti-spyware software, there's no longer a reason to hesitate. Download and install Microsoft's new Security Essentials tool (http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials), which is free, effective and remarkably lightweight - meaning it won't slow your computer down noticeably. Security Essentials has most of the features that users need, including automatic scans and updates, making it a no-fuss solution to PC security.

Washington - E-books are plentiful these days, but many require that you read them on a specific device. Not so with books delivered in PDF format, which can be read on just about any computer and most portable devices. You'll find hundreds of free e-books available in PDF format at PlanetPDF (http://www.planetpdf.com/free_pdf_ebooks.asp). The site features mostly classic works - those with no royalty payments attached.
