Beijing - Seventeen miners were trapped underground when a coal mine in north-eastern China flooded, state media reported Saturday. The mine in Meikou City, Jilin province flooded at 1:55 pm on Friday trapping the workers, the official Xinhua news agency reported, citing the local government.
The accident occurred one week after a gas explosion killed 108 workers in another coal mine in China's Heilongjiang province.
Poor management and inadequate safety precautions were blamed for that explosion.
Rescue work was underway at the Meikou city mine site on Saturday morning, but muddy conditions were hampering progress, Xinhua reported.
