Paris - A boat carrying illegal immigrants from the Comoros Islands sank off the French island of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean, drowning 21 people, French authorities announced late Thursday in Paris. Migration Minister Eric Besson said that 11 people were rescued on Wednesday, after the vessel sank on Tuesday. The search for victims was continuing.
Besson vowed to combat the people smugglers who lure impoverished migrants into dangerous journeys.
