Tokyo - Stocks in Tokyo fell in Friday morning trading due to the strong yen. The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average index was down 169.73 points, or 1.81 per cent, to stand at 9,213.51, while the broader-based Topix index lost 10.98 points, or 1.32 per cent, to trade at 818.58.
On currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT) the dollar traded at 85.16-18 yen, down from Thursday's 5 pm quote of 86.78-79 yen.
The euro was at 1.4968-70 dollars, down from 1.5089-90 dollars the previous day and at 127.45-53 yen, down from 130.95-99 yen.
A stronger yen makes Japanese producers' products more expensive abroad and reduces their overseas earnings.
