BEIJING, Feb. 11 A report from China's Ministry of Science and Technology says the Asian nation is developing its own magnetically levitated train system.

China's official Xinhua news agency said plans to build a nearly 19-mile long test line for the advanced train system by 2010 are currently part of the Chinese 11th Five-Year Plan period.

Once constructed, the trains will be able to reach speeds of up to 311 mph on the specially designed tracks.

China already has a 19-mile long maglev track near Shanghai that it built in 2003 using German technology.

The plans to develop the technologically advanced train system come in the wake of China's recent launch of 15 new bullet trains. Xinhua said those trains, which have a top speed of more than 124 mph, were launched to help deal with the increased activity surrounding the Chinese Lunar New Year's Day next Sunday.
