London - Instead of a red carpet, it was a pink carpet that greeted Britain's Queen Elizabeth II Tuesday in the mid-Atlantic island nation of Bermuda. Elizabeth, 83, and Prince Philip, 88, stepped out on a carpet the same colour as Bermuda's famous pink sands.
On her three-day visit, the queen is celebrating the 400th anniversary of Britain's overseas territory that was was first settled in 1609 by shipwrecked English colonists headed for Virginia.
The royal couple was greeted by Governor Richard Gozney and Premier Ewart Brown. Around 1,000 people gathered later in the major city St. George, lining the streets and waving flags in greeting.
After Bermuda, Elizabeth is travelling to Trinidad and Tobago, where the Commonwealth states are to meet on November 27.
