Sydney - The Bangladeshi conjoined twins separated in a marathon operation in Australia last week were out of intensive care and in an ordinary ward in Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital Monday. "We are very pleased the girls have been moved," said Margaret Smith, head of the Children First Foundation that brought joined-at-the-head Krishna and Trishna from their Dhaka orphanage two years ago.
"We are just marking the milestones and this is one that has been achieved."
Brain scans of 2-year-olds showed no damage from the 31-hour surgery and there is optimism that both could make a full recovery.
Doctors estimated that the chances of both surviving the marathon procedure were only 25 per cent and that there was only a 50-per-cent chance of avoiding brain damage.
The twins, whose third birthday is next month, are expected to stay in Australia. Their parents, who lost their rights when they gave Krishna and Trishna to the orphanage, told Bangladeshi media on the weekend that they wanted the girls to stay in Melbourne.
