Washington - A computer glitch Thursday morning forced flight cancellations and some major delays at airports along the eastern US coast. A problem with the Federal Aviation Authority's (FAA) flight plan filing system caused delays in Atlanta, New York, Washington and Chicago airports.

The glitch began just after 5 am (1000 GMT), forcing air traffic controllers to manually put in flight plans. FAA spokesman Les Dorr said there was never a safety risk and it had since been resolved, though it would take some of the day to reboot all computers.

AirTran Airways said it was forced to cancel 42 flights and delay dozens more. Other airlines suffered similar delays.
