Los Angeles - Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp was Wednesday named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive. Depp was previously chosen for the title following the 2003 release of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, in which he played the quixotic Captain Jack Sparrow.
Depp, a 46-year-old married father of two, joins other double winners Brad Pitt and George Clooney, and could even take the title a third time, according to People senior editor Kate Coyne.
"He was sexy 10 years ago, he'll be sexy 10 years from now," she said. "He appeals to multiple generations of women - and for many different reasons to different kinds of women."
That broad appeal gave him the nod over teen star du jour Robert Pattinson of Twilight, said People editor Julie Jordan.
Though the list is as usual dominated by Hollywood hunks, it also includes US President Barack Obama, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. They earned mention in the "Sexy Shirtless" category, along with Zac Efron.
Mel Gibson won the first title in 1985 and the list has been dominated by actors ever since, with John F Kennedy Jr - who won in 1988 - the only winner not to come from the acting world.
