Berlin - Germany has overtaken both Italy and Spain in a key travel indicator in European tourism, the volume of hotel bookings, bank economists in Berlin said Wednesday. In the first eight months of this year, German hotels provided 346.6 million overnight lodgings, down 0.8 per cent from a year ago, reported the Federation of German Savings Banks.
The trade in Italy and Spain, where tourism is a major sector, slumped badly in that period, meaning Germany was now Europe's leader.
The number is calculated according to each person lodged, multiplied by how many nights they stay.
