Hong Kong - A 24-year-old woman was confirmed Thursday as the second fatality in a Hong Kong road accident in which a double-decker bus overturned. The woman had been in critical condition since the accident in Hong Kong's Kowloon district early Monday. It also killed a 17-year-old schoolgirl and injured 35 other passengers.
A hospital authority spokeswoman said the woman died Wednesday night without regaining consciousness. Three other passengers remained in critical condition Thursday morning.
The 36-year-old driver of the bus, who was also injured, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death as a result of the accident.
Witnesses said the bus was speeding before it toppled onto its side as it went around a roundabout. Firefighters had to cut some survivors free from the wreckage.
In 2008, 18 mostly elderly people died in a Hong Kong bus that overturned and rolled over on a roundabout near the city's Sai Kung district.
The worst death toll in any single road accident in Hong Kong was in 2003 when 21 people died as a double-decker bus was shunted off the edge of a 30-metre highway bridge by a truck.
