Kunduz, Afghanistan - A pro-government militia commander was killed in a roadside bomb blast in northern Afghanistan Wednesday, while a German soldier was injured in the same region when Taliban fighters targeted a military convoy. Sayed Rahman was killed and two of his bodyguards injured in Khan Abad, a district in the northern province of Kunduz, on Wednesday when a bomb destroyed a bridge while they walked across, provincial governor Mohammad Omar told the German Press Agency dpa.

Rahman was commanding a local pro-government militia which had been formed recently to fight the resurgent Taliban in the district, Omar said.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid took responsibility for the attack.

Meanwhile, Taliban militants attacked a German military convoy with a rocket-propelled grenade in Kunduz' Chardarah district on Wednesday morning, Abdul Wahid Omarkhel, the district's governor, said.

The attack led to a one-hour firefight between the German troops and the Taliban, but Omarkhel could not say if there had been any fatalities.

A German military spokesman in the province confirmed that one of their soldiers was wounded in the attack. He declined to give further details.

More than 4,000 German troops are stationed in northern Afghanistan, which includes Kunduz.
