London - British car maker Axon Automotive has unveiled a plug-in hybrid using carbon fibre technology for the bodywork and combining a combustion engine with an electric motor. It is designed to drive in electric mode but switches to petrol drive as soon as the electric power fades. The mixture of petrol and electric brings carbon dioxide emissions down to 50 grammes per kilometre, according to the manufacturer.

"By designing light cars and giving them good aerodynamics you can radically lower vehicle emissions," says Axon managing director Steve Cousins.

Both the bodywork and chassis are made of lightweight carbon fibre, offering space for two people and luggage.

Axon is hoping to sell the first cars in 2011 with full production to start in 2012 at small factories in Britain, Spain, France, Ireland, Denmark and the Netherlands. The price has not yet been revealed.
