Berlin - Berlin's mayor Klaus Wowereit remembered Germany's "darkest days" in reference to the Nazi pogrom on November 9, 1938, as he spoke on 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on Monday night. Germany would not forget what was "one of the darkest days in our history," Wowereit said. "We will not allow history to repeat itself," Berlin's mayor said of the Holocaust.

Berlin's mayor thanked those who decorated a thousand giant dominoes, set to topple at the end of Monday's celebrations.

In particular, Wowereit thanked South African liberation hero and former president Nelson Mandela, who had brought down the walls of apartheid "with his fight against racism."

One of the 2.5-metre-high dominoes was decorated by school children in South Africa.

Berlin's mayor also thanked former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, for his key role in events 20 years ago.
