Washington - Having trouble figuring out how to create a PDF document? If you already have a program such as Acrobat, Foxit, or PDFCreator installed and you do not see the PDF button in the application from which you'd like to create the PDF file, you can usually use the Print dialogue box. Don't try using the Save As command, since PDF generation normally occurs by "printing" a file to an installed PDF driver, which actually writes a file to disk rather than printing it to your printer. Select PDF as your printer in the Print dialogue box and you should be all set. --------

Washington - Glossy or matte? That's one question you face when buying a new computer monitor or notebook computer with a choice of screens. Glossy screens are good if you intend to use your monitor in part to watch movies, but matte screens are often easier on the eyes for those who work primarily with office applications. Glossy screens will reflect any bright lights that are behind you, and these reflections can be distracting.

Washington - How much memory do you really need for Windows 7? Microsoft says 1 gigabyte (GB) will suffice and that is indeed enough for simply office tasks such as email, word processing and web surfing. But if you run large graphics applications, perform video editing or typically have multiple applications open at the same time, you need more. Three or four gigabytes is not too much RAM for the 32-bit edition of Windows 7.

Washington - Want to save an image that appears in a Word document? Select the image by left-clicking it. Then right-click the image and select Copy from the context sensitive menu. Open a graphics application, such as Microsoft Paint, and select Paste from the Edit menu. At that point, you can save the file to your hard drive, using a file format and name of your choosing.

Washington - Want to customise Windows 7? Download the free Ultimate Windows Tweaker (http://tinyurl.com/kvn5ke), which works with Windows 7 as well as Windows Vista. This handy little tool provides one-screen access to dozens of customisation options in Windows 7. These options would otherwise either be difficult to locate or not available to anyone but Windows Registry gurus. Use the utility to tweak the performance, appearance, and security settings of Windows 7.
