Washington - The Army psychiatrist alleged to have been the gunman in the shootings that left 13 people dead at Fort Hood, Texas, was to be deployed to Afghanistan, the US Army confirmed Friday. Major Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, was set to deploy to the war in Afghanistan in a reserve unit that treats soldiers for combat stress and mental health, Army spokeswoman Colonel Catherine Abbott said.
Abbott could not confirm when he was scheduled to head overseas. Hasan remains hospitalized and is believed to be the only gunman in the attack that also wounded 30 people.
