Jakarta - A German Red Cross worker was shot and injured by an unknown assailant in Indonesia's Aceh province, the state Antara news agency reported Friday. The Jakarta-based Red Cross official was in a car with three other people Thursday when a man on a motorcycle fired shots at the vehicle, said Antara, which did not give the name of the victim.

He was being treated at the main hospital in the provincial capital Banda Aceh with injuries to his stomach and arms, the news agency said.

Police were investigating the incident, Aceh police chief Adityawarman was quoted as saying.

Police in Aceh could not be reached immediately for comment.

Aceh was the scene of conflict between the Indonesian military and separatist rebels for decades before a peace pact was signed in 2005.
