Amsterdam - A small ceremony was due to take place on Monday to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the brutal murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh by a muslim extremist. On November 2, 2004 Moyammed Bouyeri murdered filmmaker Theo Van Gogh - known for his provocative stance on social and political issues.
Bouyeri said he killed Van Gogh because the filmmaker had offended Islam with his 2004 film Submission which criticized the lack of Muslim women's rights. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2005.
The murder sharply increased tensions between Muslims and non-Muslims in the Netherlands.
Monday's ceremony, to take place at the site of the daylight murder in Amsterdam, was organized by the Foundation Friends of Pim Fortuyn - the late liberal-right politician also assassinated, in 2002, by a leftist activist who was later sentenced to life imprisonment.
