Warsaw - A holiday weekend claimed 33 dead and 374 injured on Polish roads with 1,217 drivers pulled over for drunk driving - in what police called the calmest All Saints' Day in about a decade, local media reported. Poles celebrated All Saints' Day on Sunday, with many visiting cemeteries to put candles and flowers on graves of their loved ones.
Police throughout Poland were stationed outside cemeteries to monitor traffic and test for drunk drivers. For many Poles, the weekend involved traveling to visit relatives or making stops at several cemeteries.
Police said the lower accident rates were due to increased efforts to crack down on drunk drivers.
Some 10,000 police officers were on duty throughout the weekend to monitor drivers' speed and conduct sobriety tests.
