Manila - Typhoon Mirinae blew out of the Philippines Sunday, leaving 14 people dead and thousands homeless, the government's disaster relief agency said. Four people were also reported missing after being swept by floods, according to the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).

The NDCC said eight victims died from drowning, while three succumbed to hypothermia, two were killed when collapsed walls fell on them and one fell from a roof.

Mirinae slammed into the Philippines on Saturday, triggering floods, toppling trees and knocking out power lines.

Nearly 6,000 houses were destroyed by the strong winds, forcing about 10,000 people to stay in evacuation centres, the NDCC said.

The weather bureau said Mirinae has weakened as it moved away from the Philippines and was now packing maximum winds of 85 kph and gusts of up to 100 kph.

Previous storms that struck in late September and early October killed nearly 1,000 people.
