Doha, Qatar - Jelena Jankovic claimed a surprise spot in the semi-finals of the Sony Ericsson Championships Friday as fitness failed Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki in a 6-2, 6-2 group defeat. Wozniacki, the world number four, paid the price after playing a pair of marathons which came close to a massive six hours on court this week.
Jankovic, who ended 2008 on the number one position, played rested and refreshed to dominate the proceedings in 68 minutes.
Wozniacki lost serve five times and couldn't even manage an ace in the rout.
Serb Jankovic joined Serena Williams in reaching the final four of the eight-women season-ending event in which substitute Vera Zvonarava (ankle injury) was herself substituted by Agnieszka Radwanska.
Wozniacki, 19, and the brightest new face in the world elite, was unable to muster any reserves in the loss.
The US Open finalist's fate rests with the final White group match pitting Victoria Azarenka against Radwanska of Poland.
Jankovic was hammered in her first match by Azarenka but copped a break in her second when Russia's number one contender Dinara Safina had to quit with back pains after just two games and 12 minutes.
"I didn't know what to expect from her. I saw what happened to her yesterday (cramping) but I just concentrated on trying to win the match and get through to the semi-finals," said Jankovic.
"I just tried to dictate and keep her in long rallies."
The remaining two semi-finalists will not be decided until the end of Friday group play, with Russians Elena Dementieva and Svetlana Kuznetsova.
According to WTA calculations, if Dementieva wins, she moves into the final four. A Kuznetsova victory would put Venus Williams though alongside her sister.
