Havana - Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), praised "the work that Cuba is doing to fight the H1N1 influenza pandemic," said a statement published in Cuban state media Wednesday. Chan met with historic Cuban leader Fidel Castro Tuesday afternoon in Havana, according to the dailies Granma and Juventud Rebelde. The two discussed, among other issues,climate change and the impact of environmental problems on health, as well as the work that Cuban doctors are doing in other Latin American countries.
Chan also met with local doctors and health officials, and she visited several facilities in the field.
Castro, 83, stepped down from the leadership of the communist island three years ago for health reasons. He has not been seen in public since, but he often meets with high-profile visitors.
