Gdansk restores historic water fountainGdansk, Poland - The Polish city of Gdansk has completed work on a new fountain with 24 jets of water and four lion figures, the city's heraldic animal, in Grobil street. Before World War Two a fountain stood on the same spot when Gdansk was called by its German name of Danzig. The original fountain was built to mark the crowning of Frederick the First as King of Prussia.
Italy staging Renaissance food festival
Bologna, Italy - Renaissance style cooking is the focus of next month's "Baccanale" Wine and Food Festival in the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna. From November 7 to 22 cookery courses will be taking place in historic locations across the region with wine tasting, according to the local tourist association. Netherlands introduces paperless public transport tickets
Amsterdam - Visitors to the Netherlands can now avail of paperless tickets to travel on the country's commuter transport. The authorities are rolling out a system of chip cards to replace the old paper tickets. Cards can be bought at vending machines and charged with money thus allowing travel without the need to pay for a new ticket each time.
Monaco hosts Jazz festival
Monte Carlo - The Mediterranean principality of Monaco is hosting a jazz festival from November 24 to 28 with bebop, swing and blues music. One of the locations for the festival will be an open air venue in front of Monte Carlo's casino. Among the jazz artists due to perform is the bassist Marcus Miller. (www.visitmonaco.com)
