Rome - Danish director Nicolo Donato's film Brotherhood, about two men who become lovers after joining a gang of neo-Nazis, won Friday the Rome Film Festival's Golden Marc'Aurelio Best Film prize. Veteran British star Helen Mirren picked up the Silver Marc'Aurelio Best Actress award for her portrayal of Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy's wife, Countess Sofya, in US director Michael Hoffman's The Last Station.
There was also joy for the host nation, with Italian Sergio Castellito winning the Silver Marc'Aurelio Best Actor award for his role as Mero, a shipyard worker and single father who tries who turn his son into a champion boxer, in director Alessandro Angelini's Alza la Testa (Lift the Head).
The career Golden Marc'Aurelio Acting award went to Hollywood star Meryl Streep.
The Rome Film Festival this year marked its fourth edition with 14 films in the main competition.
Organizers said 600,000 people visited festival venues since the event began on October 15.
