New Delhi - Labour unrest at a factory near New Delhi left at least one worker dead and six injured as authorities deployed additional police amid tension at the plant Monday, a news report said. Around 200 striking workers at RICO, an auto-parts firm, sat outside the gates of the factory situated in Delhi's satellite township of Gurgaon, claiming the management was responsible for triggering the violence on Sunday evening, the IANS news agency reported.
"The workers' strike is illegal and we have given them repeated warnings to leave the place. We have adequate police presence to handle the situation," Gurgaon police chief SS Deswal told IANS.
"One factory worker has been killed and nearly six to seven have been injured," he added.
Late Sunday, a clash broke out in the factory between striking workers and those who wanted to go back to work. The situation soon spun out of control with violence and arson that left a worker dead. Around 3,500 workers are on strike in the factory.
RICO has suffered labour unrest for the past month, the report said. While the workers want to form a union, the management has rejected their demand, saying the workers have had pay hikes and the unit continuously achieves low productivity.
