Mexico City - Hurricane Rick emerged Friday off Mexico's Pacific coast and was quickly gaining strength, Mexican authorities said. It was located about 465 kilometres south of the world-famous resort of Acapulco, although predictions about its trajectory said that it might not be making landfall at all. It was, however, expected to cause rain on the coast.
Rick had sustained winds of up to 120 kilometres per hour with higher gusts, said the US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) in Miami. It was moving northwest at 15 kilometres per hour, causing swells.
Coastal areas in the Mexican states of Oaxaca, Guerrero and Michoacan were on alert.
Rick is the seventh hurricane of the season in the Pacific.
Only one hurricane has made landfall this year. In late August, Hurricane Jimena caused flooding in the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico.
