Jakarta - An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia's easternmost province of Papua late Thursday, meteorologists said. The quake occurred on land at a depth of 91 kilometres, about 160 kilometres south-west of Papua's capital Jayapura at 7:11 pm (1211 GMT), the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) said.

The BMG's statement said the quake, the latest in a series to hit Indonesia in recent weeks, did not trigger a tsunami, and there were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage.

Indonesia sits in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a chain of fault lines and volcanoes noted for seismic activity.

On September 30, a magnitude-7.6 earthquake struck West Sumatra, killing at least 1,117 people and injuring hundreds of others.
