Washington - United States forward Charlie Davies is doubtful for the 2010 World Cup after suffering fractures and a ruptured bladder in a car accident on Tuesday. Davies was hospitalised and underwent surgery on the bladder and broken bones in his leg, elbow and face. Doctors said his condition was serious but stable.

Police said that Davies was one of three people in a car which crashed early Tuesday in a Washington suburb. Another passenger died and the driver was hospitalised with undisclosed injuries. The cause of the single-car accident was unclear.

Davies, 23, plays for French club Sochaux and has won 17 US caps. he was on the team which clinched a World Cup berth last weekend with a 3-2 victory in Honduras.

However, it appears unlikely that he will be fit again for the World Cup which takes place June 11-July 11, 2010, in South Africa.

"Injuries of this nature usually require a recovery period of six to 12 months and extensive rehabilitation," said US team doctor Dan Kalbac.

US coach Bob Bradley said that "as a team we were saddened to learn this news." The US was due to play a World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica later Wednesday.
