Sydney - A German tourist who went missing while walking in a national park in Australia's south-east was found dead Tuesday. His three German companions called for help at dusk Monday, two hours after the 24-year-old had become separated from the group in rugged country at Bald Rock.
A police helicopter joined rangers in the search, and the body was located around midday.
"We have found a body that is believed to be the missing German tourist," Inspector Rodney Shoesmith of Armidale Police said. "Identification is not confirmed yet, but police have sealed the area, and forensic service groups are on their way to examine the body and the scene in conjunction with local detectives who will then prepare a report for the coroner."
Bald Rock is in the Boonoo Boonoo National Park, about 45 kilometres north of Tenterfield in New South Wales.
"He's just decided to have a look down another track and wandered off, believing he could find his way back," Shoesmith said. "We don't know what happened after that."
The man was wearing only shorts and a T-shirt, and had no backpack or food or water, police said.
The tourists had been staying at Stanthorpe in Queensland and were visiting Bald Rock for the day.
