Frankfurt - Although some newer digital cameras are coming out with photo processing functions, computers still remain the best platform for doing such work, according to the German Photo Industry Association. These days, it's not unusual for a camera to offer functions like red-eye removal. But the range of options is much wider on a computer and it is likely to always remain that way, says the group.
It's a question of computing power. A camera is unlikely to ever match a computer in this respect. Nor is its display ever going to have the same range as a computer monitor. Indeed, the more intense the digital manipulation, the more important it is to have a powerful computer with a good monitor and beefy graphics chip.
Personal preference should dictate the programme used. Even freeware programmes come with most commonly used tools. Some programmes are designed with specialized needs in mind.
However, anyone who wants to regularly manipulate digital images will need to eventually purchase a programme, reports the industry association. Even if the programme has more options than will ever be needed, it will still be a good investment, since the possibilities presented by the new options will free up the photographer's room to manoeuvre.
