Mexico City - Mexico qualified for the 2010 World Cup with a 4-1 win over El Salvador at the Estadio Azteca Saturday in Mexico City. Before 100,000 spectators, Mexico pulled ahead with an own goal from El Salvador's Marvin Gonzalez in the 25th minute. Cuauhtemoc Blanco made things 2-0 in the 70th minute, and Juan Francisco Palencia gave Mexico insurance in the 84th minute.
A powerful free kick from Julio Martinez pulled one back for El Salvador in the 88th minute, but Arsenal striker Carlos Vela set the definitive 4-1 a minute later.
A curious note in the game came in the first minute, when referee Carlos Batres spotted a beehive at one of the goals. Play was suspended for six minutes.
On Wednesday, Mexico is set to play Trinidad and Tobago, which, like El Salvador, is already eliminated from contention to reach South Africa next year.
