Prague - Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer on Saturday congratulated Poland on the signing of the European Union reform treaty by Polish President Lech Kaczynski. In a statement from his office, Fischer said he was "at the same time of the view that document could be ratified in the Czech Republic in the foreseeable future."
After Kacyznski signed the Lisbon Treaty, it left Czech counterpart Vaclav Klaus as the only European leader remaining to sign the document before it can take effect.
Czech Europe Minister Stefan Fuele also congratulated Poland, saying he hoped for a Czech ratification this year.
The Czech president is the sole European leader who has yet to ratify the treaty, which must first get a nod from the country's Constitutional Court due to a legal challenge.
Klaus demanded Friday that before he ratified the pact the Czech Republic would get an opt-out from a part of the Lisbon Treaty that would allow Germans expelled after World War II to sue for their confiscated property.
