Cairo - Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi asked senior officials to find an official post for his son Saif al-Islam so that he could "complete his reforms in Libya," media reports said on Thursday. Gaddafi was speaking at a "secret meeting" in Sebha, south of Tripoli, addressing senior officials in local councils and committees and members of the General People's Congress (the parliament), the pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat reported.
"Gaddafi suggested finidng an official post for his son without restricting him to a four-year government term of office, which does not allow him to complete his role towards Libya," the paper reported.
Saif al-Islam, the second eldest son of the Libyan leader, plays a prominent role in Libya's political landscape. He took a central role in ending Libya's isolation, restoring diplomatic links between his country and the US and in releasing the Lockerbie bomber Abdel-Baset al-Megrahi.
He also runs a charitable foundation, called Gaddafi foundation, which deals with issues of human rights, development and aid.
The 37-year-old, whose name means "Sword of Islam," announced he would withdraw from the political arena because "problems" would arise if he were to continue.
Later, thousands of young Libyans held a demonstration in central Tripoli urging Moamer Gaddafi to ensure his son became politically active again.
