Colombo – A British cabinet minister began a two-day visit to Sri Lanka Tuesday to assess the government's resettlement plans for an estimated 250,000 people displaced by the country's civil war, officials said. Mike Foster, British Parliamentary under secretary of state for international development, was scheduled to visit refugee camps in the north, a British-funded child soldier rehabilitation centre in Vavuniya and a demining programme also backed by Britain.

Foster also planned to meet UN agencies and non-governmental organisations involved in resettling displaced persons.

His visit comes amidst growing pressure on the Sri Lankan government to expedite the resettlement of the displaced in their former villages.

The refugees have been living in heavily guarded camps for periods varying to four months to one year. They were displaced in the final phase of fighting between government troops and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

The war ended in May with the defeat of the Tamil rebels.

IDP Camps
By: Bikku , Wed, 07 Oct 2009 04:07:59 GMT

The government of Srilanka is keeping the IDPs in the camp saying the landmines have to be cleared prior to settle these people. The truth is they don't want to give these areas to the foreign countries for landmine clearance cos thousands of people have been murdered by the seurity forces and been buried in these areas and they don't want the truth to be known to the foreign countries. They are not letting anyone to go there. Why aren't the government not letting any one to go there. Any person with a head on his shoulder will understand this except for the thick head singalese.

All refugee camps around the world are guarded and they are not luxury camps elsewhere as the western media potraits.Just like other places such as Iraq, Afganistan etc where the west has messed up SL was messed up by the tamils. Now the government is trying its best genuingly to settle them ASAP.BBC has already started the foul mouth agian and next will be AP and the rest of the Merdoch media. However we SriLankans cannnot be eassilly intimidated like the westerners want. So back off and let the Government handle it or pay for the refugees to be kept in 5 star hotels in SriLanka.

Sri Lanka IDP problem
By: Alistair Cedric Pulley , Tue, 06 Oct 2009 16:35:06 GMT

These Europeans and UN bureaucrats are making such fools of themselves in wasteful junkets to Sri Lanka's IDP camps as though they were zoos. The fact is Britain and France are dead empires and declining into oblivion. The UN is utterly impotent and deserves the mockery and condemnation of the world.

By: Dhaliwal , Tue, 06 Oct 2009 16:05:42 GMT

Srilanka using I.D.P., camps as bait and get several million dollars from U.S., western countries India and Australia, but no transperancy in how m much spending toward IDP camps. N.g.o.,s are not allowed to IDP camps.
Mercy mission ship was not allowed in Colombo port for IDP assigned emergency supplies.
