Dusseldorf - A German publisher has cancelled plans to publish a mass-market novel out of fears that it might face violent protests due to a rude reference to the Koran, Der Spiegel magazine reported Saturday. The crime novel - about the "honour killing" of a Muslim woman - had been scheduled for September publication, but the Droste publishing company of Dusseldorf decided not to print it after all, the magazine said in a story to appear in its Monday issue.

It said the publisher had first asked the author, Gabriele Brinkmann, writing under the pen name WW Domsky, to tone down dialogue in "To Those Worthy of Honour" which might be construed as offensive, but she had refused.

Spiegel reported that the offensive phrase in question was a character saying: "You can shove your Koran up ..."

Publisher Felix Droste had asked an expert on Islamic society to study whether the crime story's text could compromise the safety of his firm or his family, and the expert suggested the phrase be modified.

But the author refused to alter it to "You can shove your honour up ..."

Droste wrote back that riots over Danish cartoons that poked fun at the Prophet Mohammed in 2005 showed that anyone publishing insults to Islam was putting their safety at risk, Spiegel said.

Unbeliable
By: , Mon, 05 Oct 2009 21:26:21 GMT

Freedom of expression is something dying for. Modern values, reason, fraternity and freedom must make a stand against irrationality and dogma. The time will com when the two will collide, determining the death or progress of the human life.

Islamic threat
By: Don , Sun, 04 Oct 2009 12:30:41 GMT

What a surprise, thee Werst once agains caves into the possiblity that The Religion of Peace will erupt in violence over a book. Fatwas anyone? It's time to stand up to these thugs and show thee world what The Religion of Peace - what a false moniker if there ever was one - is a all about.

Intimidation-Fear-Submission
By: filthykaffir , Sun, 04 Oct 2009 12:07:35 GMT

Mr. Droste's fear of Muslim-supremacist violence is, of course, well founded. Examples of such are plentiful. But, the the assertion and maintenance of liberty demands courage, and the German publisher failed to grow a spine when the opportunity came to him.

We in the West must vigorously, unrelentingly, practice our freedoms, especially in the face of the intolerance and threats of violence based on the supremacist ideology of Islam. When we do not, the threats are successful.

I do not submit.

Never appease
By: CraigT , Sun, 04 Oct 2009 09:04:06 GMT

Appeasement in the face of threats only encourages violence and additional threats. The sooner you draw the line in the sand, the less you have to do to defend it.

An adaptation I did of a famous poem about Nazis by Pastor Martin Niem?ller.

Muslim outrage:

At first, the Muslims were outraged by cartoons but I didn't speak up because I wasn't an artist.

And then the Muslims were outraged by history books and news but I didn't speak up because I don't read much.

And then the Muslims were outraged by women who weren't completely veiled but I didn't speak up because I'm not a woman.

And then the Muslims were outraged by the practice of other religions but I didn't speak up because I'm not very religious.

And then the Muslims were outraged by the existence of Infidels so when they came for me … there was no one left to speak up.

The last line is the ultimate goal of Islam the rest are just steps towards that goal.

Insults

I for one will be boycotting this firm for encouraging continued terrorism.
Hopefully, others in the Deutschsprachigenraum will be doing the same!

Islam insults me daily with its misogyny and remarks about kufiers
- when islam ceases insulting me, I in turn, will cease insulting islam.

The end of civilization?
By: Paul , Sun, 04 Oct 2009 06:33:40 GMT

This story together with Yale University Press refusing to reprint the Danish Cartoons in "The Cartoons That Shook The World" show a worrying trend of self censorship. The threat of violence from muslims is starting to undo the very things that make western civilization great - freedom of expression and healthy criticism.

Boycott Droste
By: Stephen Gash , Sat, 03 Oct 2009 17:28:19 GMT

Caving in to Muslim threats and violence makes it worse for the rest of us.

Boycott all companies that appease Muslims and construction companies that build mosques.

Hit their profits.
