Virginia Water, Britain - The European Tour on Friday announced that Spanish golfer Rafael Cabrera-Bello has been named the Golfer of the Month for September. The 25-year-old carded a fantastic 60 in the final round at the Austrian Golf Open, allowing him to win his first title on the European Tour, even though he began the last round eight behind overnight leader Benn Barham.

Cabrera-Bello joined Ian Woosnam (Monte Carlo Open 1990) and Jamie Spence (1992 European Masters) as players who played a 60 on their last round.

Cabrera-Bello managed 11 birdies and had a 30-foot putt on the last hole to take his score to 59, which would have been the lowest- ever score in European Tour history.

"It is a huge honour to win this award. It is a pleasure to see my name there alongside many great players that have won this award in the past and it gives me a lot of motivation and confidence for the future. This is the culmination of many years of hard work.

"I feel very proud and it is very rewarding for what has been the best month of my career. I had been struggling a bit recently so to flip the coin like this so quickly is fantastic," Cabrera-Bello said in a statement issued by the European Tour.

Previous winners of The 2009 Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month Award are: Rory McIlroy (January), Geoff Ogilvy (February), Soren Kjeldsen (March), Angel Cabrera (April), Shane Lowry (May), Nick Dougherty (June), Martin Kaymer (July) and Lee Westwood (August).

The overall winner will be selected following the Dubai World Championship in November, where the winner of The Race to Dubai will be confirmed.
